Schumer blasts GOP budget priorities, pushes votes on costs, healthcare, and Iran war

Senate Democrats are escalating a multi-front political fight in Washington, with Majority Leader Chuck Schumer pressing Republicans on rising costs, healthcare policy, immigration funding, and U.S. involvement in Iran.

In a series of floor speeches and statements Wednesday, Schumer outlined a coordinated strategy to force votes during the Senate’s “vote-a-rama,” framing the debate as a stark contrast between Democratic efforts to lower costs and Republican priorities in a sweeping budget package.

At the center of the push is a proposed amendment that would block any reconciliation bill from advancing unless it reduces out-of-pocket healthcare costs. Schumer argued that Americans are facing rising premiums and drug prices, and said Congress should prioritize relief rather than broader spending measures.

He tied those concerns to a broader critique of Republican-backed policies, claiming previous healthcare cuts have led to higher costs and reduced access, particularly for those relying on Medicare, Medicaid, and Affordable Care Act coverage.

The cost-of-living debate extended beyond healthcare. Schumer repeatedly criticized a Republican budget resolution that directs billions toward Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol, arguing that funding should instead be focused on lowering expenses for housing, groceries, energy, and childcare.

Democrats plan to introduce a series of amendments aimed at forcing votes on those issues, including measures tied to reducing healthcare, housing, and energy costs. The strategy is designed to put Republicans on record and highlight policy differences ahead of future negotiations.

Schumer also linked the domestic cost debate to foreign policy, pointing to the ongoing U.S. conflict with Iran as a driver of rising gas prices. He urged Republicans to support a War Powers Resolution that would end U.S. involvement, arguing the conflict is increasing economic pressure on American families.

Throughout his remarks, Schumer characterized the Republican approach as out of step with public concerns, while positioning Democrats as focused on affordability and economic relief.

The legislative battle is expected to unfold through a series of amendment votes in the Senate, where Democrats say they will continue pressing for changes centered on lowering costs and shifting federal priorities.
