The Finger Lakes Community College volleyball team delivered a program-defining performance on Thursday afternoon, defeating Union College in the opening round of the inaugural NJCAA National Championship to advance on the national stage. Competing at the first officially recognized championship event, the Lakers turned the tables on a familiar opponent that had beaten them twice earlier this season, securing a milestone victory in the program’s history.
FLCC volleyball showed poise from the start, using a balanced attack and steady defense to control the match. After struggling against Union College in previous meetings, the Lakers adjusted effectively, executing with consistency in key moments to earn the breakthrough win.
Ethan Bond powered the offense with 17 kills and an efficient hitting performance, setting the tone throughout the match. Zach Sipos added 11 kills and was a strong presence at the net, while Dominick Alverado contributed six kills to round out the attack. Setter Cole Thomas kept the offense flowing with 38 assists, distributing the ball well and allowing multiple hitters to get involved.
Defensively, the Lakers matched their offensive intensity. Jack Donovan anchored the back row with eight digs, helping limit Union’s opportunities, while Braden Whitcomb made an impact at the net with two solo blocks and two block assists.
The win marks a significant step forward for FLCC, not only advancing in the bracket but also showcasing growth against a team that had previously controlled the matchup.
FLCC volleyball will face top-seeded College of DuPage on Friday at 4 p.m. as the Lakers continue their run at the NJCAA National Championship.
