The Rochester Americans opened the postseason with a 5-0 loss to the Toronto Marlies on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Coliseum, falling behind 1-0 in the best-of-three series and putting themselves one game from elimination.
The Rochester Americans struggled to generate offense against the Toronto Marlies, who controlled play early and built a first-period lead they never relinquished. Toronto struck twice in the opening frame and continued to apply pressure throughout the game, while Rochester was unable to find a breakthrough. Despite the loss, seven Amerks made their professional playoff debuts, including Carson Meyer, Matteo Costantini, Olivier Nadeau, Red Savage, Noah Laaouan, Isaac Belliveau and Radim Mrtka. Konsta Helenius and Trevor Kuntar led the team with three shots apiece but were unable to solve goaltender Artur Akhtyamov.
Devon Levi kept Rochester within reach for stretches, turning aside 26 shots while facing steady pressure in all three periods. However, the Marlies capitalized on their chances, with Vinni Lettieri leading the way with a four-point performance, including a hat trick. Michael Pezzetta and Benoit-Olivier Groulx also contributed goals as Toronto extended its strong run dating back to the regular season.
Akhtyamov earned the shutout in his AHL playoff debut, continuing his success against Rochester after a solid regular-season showing in the matchup.
The Americans will look to respond and extend their season when the series shifts back to Rochester for Game 2 on Friday, April 24 at Blue Cross Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
