Violence surge shakes NY prisons

Violence inside Green Haven Correctional Facility has exploded, and state leaders are scrambling to regain control, according to Spectrum News.

Officials say staff use-of-force incidents jumped sharply over the past decade, with Green Haven alone rising from 89 cases in 2015 to 357 in 2024. The commissioner points to a more violent inmate population and rising assaults, while promising better training and de-escalation.

The crisis deepened after two inmate deaths tied to staff, leading to dozens of charges, expanded camera use, and new inmate-led mediation programs aimed at reducing tension and restoring order.
