Hornell cracks down on e-bikes with strict new safety rules

Riders in Hornell now face stricter rules on e-bikes and scooters after officials moved to curb dangerous behavior, according to the Hornell Evening Tribune.

City leaders approved the law unanimously, requiring riders to be at least 16, wear helmets, and stay on roads with speed limits of 30 mph or less. The law also caps speeds at 20 mph and bans most sidewalk riding, with added restrictions in parks.

Officials say the surge in e-vehicles led to safety concerns, including speeding and close calls with pedestrians. Violations can bring fines up to $500 or even jail time for repeat offenses.
