One of the Finger Lakes’ largest running events is set to return later this month, bringing hundreds of runners and increased traffic around Seneca Lake.
The Seneca7, a 77.7-mile relay race, will take place Sunday, April 26, with organizers urging motorists to be especially cautious on roadways throughout the day.
The race begins at 5:45 a.m. at the Geneva Lakefront Welcome Center, where teams of seven runners will set off in staggered waves continuing through 9:45 a.m. The course will take participants down the west side of Seneca Lake along Route 14, through Watkins Glen, and back north along the eastern shore.
Organizers said drivers should expect heavier traffic along the west side of the lake during the morning hours, with activity shifting through Watkins Glen around mid-day. Increased race-related traffic is expected along East Lake Road between Sampson State Park and Geneva between 4 and 8 p.m.
While some intersections will be managed by first responders, much of the course relies on volunteers assisting with traffic and runner exchanges. Organizers emphasized that safety remains a priority and encouraged drivers to remain alert and patient.
Now in its 14th year, the Seneca7 draws more than 300 teams from across the region and beyond, making it one of the most prominent endurance events in the Finger Lakes.
