Parolee arrested after Newark standoff, crash into home: Everything we know now

A parolee released earlier this month is back in custody after a chaotic chain of events in Newark that ended with a crash into a home and a hours-long standoff.

Police say the incident began Friday night when officers attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, eventually crashing into a house on Hoffman Street.

Authorities said three people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Two fled the scene and remain at large, while the driver, identified as James Wright Jr., 30, ran into the home and barricaded himself in the basement.

The situation prompted a large emergency response, including Newark police, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, and the sheriff’s SWAT team. Newark fire crews and EMS were also called to the scene. Officials said no injuries were reported.

After several hours, Wright surrendered around 10:15 p.m. and was taken into custody.

Authorities said Wright had been released on parole earlier this month. He now faces charges including second-degree burglary for allegedly entering the home, along with a parole violation.

Police said the two other individuals who fled from the vehicle have been identified and are expected to be taken into custody. The investigation remains ongoing.
