A college check for just $125 helped expose a much bigger problem—nonprofits across New York quietly funding political campaigns, according to the Times Union.
The investigation found hundreds of 501(c)(3) groups, including Syracuse University and Liberty Affordable Housing Inc., made donations despite strict bans. Some payments went to PACs through membership dues, while others tied closely to projects or funding decisions. Many groups blamed accounting mistakes and asked for refunds.
State records show millions in public funding often flowed near the same time as donations. Watchdogs say internal controls and audits should have caught the violations, raising concerns about oversight.
