Police could soon stop working with federal immigration agents in most cases under a sweeping plan from Kathy Hochul, according to The Ithaca Journal.
Her proposal would bar local officers from assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement unless they suspect a crime with probable cause. She also wants to ban masks for law enforcement, block ICE from public buildings without warrants, and stop local funding for detention centers.
Critics on both sides aren’t buying it. Immigrant advocates say it doesn’t go far enough, while Republicans argue it weakens public safety. Federal officials say agents wouldn’t follow a mask ban if it becomes law.
