Tourism clash looms over rental rules debate in Ontario County

A quiet Finger Lakes county could soon reject a statewide push to track short-term rentals just as tourism ramps up, according to RochesterFirst.

Officials in Ontario County say they’re leaning toward opting out of a required registry for platforms like Airbnb, citing costs and limited public input. Unlike other counties, they lack a tax structure to fund the program, making implementation tougher.

Leaders stress they can revisit the decision later, but for now, the board is expected to vote in May — setting the stage for how the region balances tourism growth with regulation.
