Plans are underway in Waterloo to recognize local Purple Heart recipients this summer, with officials urging residents to submit applications ahead of an early May deadline.
The Village of Waterloo Purple Heart Committee will host its annual recognition ceremony on June 16 at 10 a.m. in Lafayette Park, where honorees will have their names added to the village’s Purple Heart Monument.
The event continues Waterloo’s longstanding tradition of honoring military service, particularly those wounded or killed in combat. The Purple Heart, established by George Washington in 1782, is awarded to service members injured or killed as a result of enemy action.
Officials said applications to recognize eligible veterans must be submitted by May 8. Forms are available at the Waterloo Village Office, Waterloo Town Office, and the Seneca County Veterans Department.
To qualify, applicants must provide proof of military service, typically through a DD-214 or DD-215 form showing the award. Additional documentation, such as official military orders or a VA verification letter, may also be accepted if the award is not listed.
Organizers say the initiative reflects the village’s continued commitment to honoring veterans and preserving their legacy within the community.
