Most voters blame Trump for rising gas prices as approval rating remains low, poll finds

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A majority of U.S. voters say President Donald Trump is responsible for rising gas prices as his overall job approval rating continues to lag, according to a new national poll released Wednesday.

The Quinnipiac University survey found 65% of voters blame Trump at least in part for recent increases at the pump, including 51% who say he is largely responsible.

The findings come as the U.S. conflict with Iran continues to influence global energy markets, with voters sharply divided along party lines. Nearly all Democrats surveyed said Trump bears responsibility, while most Republicans said he does not.

Trump’s overall job approval rating stands at 38%, with 55% of voters disapproving, figures that remain largely unchanged from late March. His approval rating on handling the economy also sits at 38%, matching a low point recorded in previous polls.

The survey also highlights skepticism about U.S. military involvement in Iran. Fifty-three percent of voters oppose the military action, while 40% support it.

Concerns extend beyond the conflict itself. Nearly two-thirds of voters said a recent threat attributed to Trump — warning that “a whole civilization” could be destroyed — was unacceptable. Additionally, 65% said they would oppose U.S. strikes on civilian infrastructure in Iran if negotiations fail.

Looking ahead, most voters expect the conflict to continue for months or longer, with many believing it could last a year or more.

The poll, conducted April 9-13 among more than 1,000 registered voters nationwide, underscores ongoing political divisions over foreign policy, energy costs, and presidential leadership during a period of heightened global tension.
