A Clifton Springs woman is facing a felony charge after investigators say she improperly received more than $2,300 in public assistance benefits.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office issued an appearance ticket April 15 to 33-year-old Katlin M. Caplinger following an investigation into alleged welfare fraud.
According to investigators, the case began after the Ontario County Department of Social Services received an anonymous complaint alleging Caplinger was selling her benefits. A subsequent investigation determined she had been receiving assistance on behalf of a child who no longer lived in her household.
Authorities said Caplinger would have received $2,338 less in benefits had she accurately reported the change in household composition.
She was charged with one count of welfare fraud in the fourth degree and is scheduled to appear in Hopewell Town Court at a later date to answer the charge.
