Phelps Arts Center invites community to help restore historic building during volunteer day

A local effort to restore a historic community landmark is getting a boost from volunteers, as the Phelps Arts Center prepares to host a day of hands-on work later this month.

The organization is inviting residents to take part in a Community Involvement Day on Saturday, April 18, focused on cleaning and preparing the building for future programming and events.

Volunteers will assist with both indoor and outdoor projects, including raking leaves, weeding, and clearing interior spaces. Organizers say participants can contribute for as little or as much time as they’re able, and all skill levels are welcome. Attendees are encouraged to bring basic tools such as rakes, gloves, and gardening supplies.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the arts center, located at 15 Church St. in the village. Parking is available on nearby streets and in public lots along Church and Exchange streets.

The building holds a longstanding place in the community, having previously served as a church and later a public library. Leaders say the cleanup effort is part of a broader mission to bring the space back into regular use as a hub for arts, education, and community events.

The Phelps Arts Center focuses on promoting creative expression through visual and performing arts, while working to create an inclusive space for residents across the community.
