The Victor Fire Department is asking the community to support a former member who was critically injured earlier this month in an accidental shooting.
Tyler Eifert, a former Victor firefighter and the son of the department’s assistant chief, was shot in the chest April 7 when a holstered firearm fell from his truck and discharged, according to a statement shared by the department.
Eifert, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and firearm instructor based in Greensboro, North Carolina, suffered life-threatening injuries and required multiple blood transfusions after the incident. Officials said immediate aid from coworkers and a nearby Army medic helped stabilize him before he was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
He has since been released from the hospital and is beginning recovery, including physical therapy, but is expected to be out of work for at least two months.
The department said a fundraiser has been organized to help offset medical expenses and lost income during his recovery, encouraging community members to contribute if they are able.
