Fifteen historic locks and decades of canal history drew visitors across Wayne County earlier this month, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
The Canal Society of New York State led a two-day tour April 3–4, tracing 35 miles along three canal systems. The group explored locks from the original “Clinton’s Ditch,” the Enlarged Erie Canal, and today’s Barge Canal, each with distinct designs and purposes.
Tour stops included aqueduct ruins, drydocks, and historic canal sites, with local historians explaining their significance. Newark Mayor Jonathan Taylor also outlined plans to improve visitor experiences along the canal corridor.
