Round and square dance returns to York Central School in May

A long-standing Western New York tradition will return next month as the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts hosts its annual Round and Square Dance in Livingston County.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, at York Central School in Retsof, with instruction beginning at 6:30 p.m. and dancing running from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Organizers say the family-friendly evening is designed to bring people together through music and dance, offering an accessible experience for all ages and skill levels. No partner, prior experience or special attire is required.

The event will feature live music from Kelly’s Old Timers, a regional band with roots dating back to 1950. Now in its third generation, the group continues to perform traditional dance music, with Elise Kelly serving as a musician and caller.

Callers will guide participants through “Eastern style” round and square dances, with a focus on simple, easy-to-follow steps. A pre-event instruction session led by Jim Kimball will help newcomers learn the basics before the main program begins.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12, with tickets available at the door or online. Refreshments will also be offered during the event.

Organizers say the goal is to create a welcoming environment where community members can connect while helping sustain a cultural tradition that has been part of the region for generations.
