Ithaca College will recognize two influential figures in public health and the arts during its upcoming commencement ceremony, awarding honorary degrees to a longtime local health leader and a nationally recognized theater pioneer.
The college announced that Frank Kruppa and Robert Moss will be honored during the 131st commencement ceremony scheduled for May 17 at Glazer Arena on campus.
Kruppa, former Tompkins County Commissioner of Whole Health, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and his broader impact on public health in the region. He played a central role in establishing mass testing and vaccination efforts while coordinating with local colleges, healthcare systems, and public safety agencies during a period of uncertainty.
Beyond the pandemic response, Kruppa led the integration of public health and mental health services in Tompkins County, creating a unified “Whole Health” department. He has also contributed to workforce development in public health through teaching, mentorship, and expanding access to internships and research opportunities.
More recently, Kruppa joined Centralus Health, where he is working to improve healthcare access in underserved communities between Elmira and Ithaca and support the development of a crisis stabilization center.
Moss, a director, educator, and founder of Playwrights Horizons, will receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree for his decades-long contributions to theater and arts education. He established Playwrights Horizons in 1971, helping launch the careers of numerous playwrights and shaping one of the country’s most influential nonprofit theater organizations.
His ties to the Ithaca community run deep. Moss served as artistic director of the Hangar Theatre for 14 seasons, where he created opportunities for Ithaca College students to gain hands-on experience. He later led Syracuse Stage and has continued mentoring emerging artists through teaching and guest workshops.
The commencement ceremony is set for 10 a.m. and will celebrate the achievements of graduating students alongside the recognition of these two honorees.
