A Seneca County library will play a central role in providing public access to documents tied to an ongoing federal environmental cleanup.
The Edith B. Ford Memorial Library in Ovid has been designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as the Administrative Record Facility for a cleanup project at the former Seneca Army Depot in Romulus.
The designation means the library will serve as the official location where community members can review records, reports, and other materials related to the cleanup of the New Age Renewable Energy LLC site within the depot.
The site is part of the larger Seneca Army Depot, which has remained on the federal Superfund list due to contamination of soil and groundwater by organic chemicals and heavy metals. Cleanup efforts began in the late 1990s, before the depot officially closed in 2000, and have continued as portions of the property are redeveloped.
EPA officials are expected to begin a new phase of removal work at the site in the coming months. The administrative record will document the agency’s actions and provide transparency into the cleanup process.
Library officials say the designation allows them to make key environmental documents accessible to the public and encourages residents to stay informed as the project moves forward.
