Syracuse women’s lacrosse rallies past Cornell behind dominant second half defense

No. 4 Syracuse women’s lacrosse improved to 10-3 on the season with a 10-8 win over Cornell on Tuesday evening, extending its winning streak to 10 games behind a strong second-half defensive effort.

Trailing 6-4 in the second quarter, the Orange responded with five unanswered goals over a 20-minute stretch spanning the end of the first half and the entire third quarter. The run flipped momentum and gave Syracuse a 9-6 lead it would not relinquish.

Syracuse’s defense was the difference after halftime, allowing just two goals over the final 30 minutes. Coco Vandiver led the effort with three caused turnovers as the Orange consistently disrupted Cornell’s attack and limited scoring chances.

Molly Guzik paced the offense with four points on two goals and two assists, extending her goal-scoring streak to 13 consecutive games. Caroline Trinkaus added a hat trick, including a key fourth-quarter goal that helped secure the win.

The teams traded goals early, with Syracuse tying the game at 3-3 after the first quarter. Cornell built a 6-4 advantage midway through the second before the Orange took control with their decisive run.

Cornell ended a nearly 28-minute scoring drought in the fourth quarter, but Syracuse maintained its edge and closed out the two-goal victory.
