The New York Yankees were held in check offensively and suffered their first loss of the season, falling 2-1 to the Seattle Mariners on a walk-off single Monday night at T-Mobile Park.
Ryan Weathers turned in a solid Yankees debut, allowing one run on four hits over 4.1 innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. The left-hander worked out of early trouble and retired seven straight at one point before exiting in the fifth with the Yankees trailing 1-0.
New York struggled to generate offense against Luis Castillo, who limited the Yankees to two hits over six scoreless innings while striking out seven. Both hits were erased on the bases, preventing the Yankees from building momentum.
The Yankees broke through in the seventh inning after Castillo exited. Ben Rice singled and later scored on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly from Amed Rosario to tie the game at 1-1.
The bullpen kept the game even into the ninth. Brent Headrick and Camilo Doval worked out of a jam in the seventh, and the relief corps remained scoreless until the final frame. Paul Blackburn allowed the deciding run in the bottom of the ninth, as Seattle delivered a one-out walk-off single.
Giancarlo Stanton continued his strong start with a double in the ninth, extending his multi-hit streak to four games, but the Yankees could not capitalize with the go-ahead run in scoring position.
The Yankees will look to bounce back Tuesday at 9:40 p.m., when Max Fried is scheduled to face Logan Gilbert in Seattle.
