Authorities charged an inmate following an incident at the Ontario County Jail in Canandaigua.
Rafael Nieves-Cruz, 34, was charged with second-degree assault after an investigation into an incident involving another inmate.
The arrest took place at about 6:37 p.m. on March 26 at the jail.
Investigators said the incident occurred March 25, when Nieves-Cruz intentionally caused physical injury to another inmate by striking him in the face.
Officials said the injured inmate was evaluated by medical staff and cleared to return to housing.
Nieves-Cruz remained in custody at the Ontario County Jail pending arraignment.
