Authorities arrested a California parcel service employee accused of stealing checks totaling about $120,000, including one tied to a New York college savings account.
Deangelo Anderson Rodriguez, 25, of Chula Vista, was charged with grand theft, identity theft and forgery, according to the New York State Comptroller’s Office.
Investigators said the case involves a $24,632.84 check from the New York 529 College Savings Program that was intended to pay a student’s tuition.
Officials said the payment never reached the college, preventing the student from registering for classes.
A joint investigation found the suspect allegedly stole the 529 check along with 24 payroll checks while working at a parcel distribution center.
Authorities said the case was handled in coordination with the Chula Vista Police Department.
Rodriguez was arraigned in San Diego Superior Court and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
