A Keuka College student completed a field placement at a Colorado detention center as part of her studies in criminology and criminal justice.
Kyra Tappin spent four weeks working inside the facility, gaining firsthand experience with correctional operations and inmate interactions.
During the placement, Tappin worked with a chaplain and interacted with incarcerated individuals across multiple housing units.
She said the experience helped her better understand rehabilitation and the challenges faced by correctional staff.
Tappin, who plans a career in law enforcement, said the experience broadened her perspective beyond the courtroom and policing aspects of the field.
College officials said the placement was part of the school’s Field Period program, which provides hands-on learning opportunities.
