The New York Mets are adding a familiar veteran to their organization, agreeing to a minor-league contract with outfielder Tommy Pham on Thursday, according to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo.
Mets split doubleheader with Braves The deal gives Pham a chance to earn $2.5 million if he reaches the majors, with incentives that could push his total compensation to $3.1 million. It also includes an opt-out clause on April 25.
Pham, 38, returns to the Mets after spending part of the 2023 season in Queens. During that stint, he appeared in 79 games and posted a .268 batting average with a .348 on-base percentage and .472 slugging percentage, along with 10 home runs and 36 RBI. A proven hitter against left-handed pitching, Pham owns a career .802 OPS with 49 home runs against southpaws.
He has played for 10 teams across 12 major league seasons, providing experience and versatility throughout his career. The Mets traded him to the Arizona Diamondbacks at the 2023 deadline in exchange for minor league infielder Jeremy Rodriguez.
Pham is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Syracuse, but he could emerge as a depth option in the outfield. His presence may become more significant with Mike Tauchman sidelined after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus.
