Waterloo is calling on residents to help recognize wounded veterans, according to the Finger Lakes Times, as the village prepares to add names to its Purple Heart Monument.

Officials will engrave eligible recipients’ names in Lafayette Park, continuing a local tradition tied to Waterloo’s claim as the Birthplace of Memorial Day. The Purple Heart honors service members wounded or killed in combat, a distinction dating back to 1782.

Applications are available at village, town, and county offices, and applicants must provide military records confirming the award. Officials urge anyone with questions to contact the village administrator for guidance.
