HWS debate team posts major tournament wins

Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ debate team has advanced in national and international competitions during the 2026–2027 season.

Two students reached the quarterfinals of the United States University Debate Championship, held at the University of Pennsylvania.

Hudson Chou ’27 and Sasha Zory ’28 advanced to elimination rounds at the national tournament, marking the second time Chou has reached that stage.

The team also competed at the World University Debate Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria, with four students representing the college.

HWS Debate gathers for a team photo at Novice Nationals, hosted by Cornell University, where Martin MacConnell ’29 and Henry Snider ’29 won the championship title.

At the Cornell Novice National Championships, Martin MacConnell ’29 and Henry Snider ’29 won the title after defeating teams from Cornell, Yale and Stanford.

Mei Le ’29 placed fifth as best rookie speaker at the same event.

At a tournament hosted by Bard College, Briana Reyes ’28 and Dylan Ballard ’28 won the Open Final Championship, while Isaak Uriu ’28 and Hillel Wasserman ’28 won the Novice Final Championship.

Additional team members earned speaker awards and served as adjudicators during competitions.
