A new bishop will soon lead the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, marking a leadership change for Catholic churches across Auburn and the region, according to The Citizen.
The Vatican named John Bonnici to replace Bishop Salvatore Matano, who has led the diocese since 2014. The diocese serves parishes across several counties, including Cayuga and Tompkins.
Local churches such as St. Mary’s in Auburn will see the transition as diocesan leadership passes to the new bishop. Church leaders say the change continues a line of bishops guiding the Rochester diocese since the late 1800s.
