A New York cosmetologist’s fight over a surprise lawsuit helped spark a new law banning job contracts that force workers to repay training costs, according to Spectrum News 1.
Trisha D’Allaird said her former employer required her to sign a training repayment agreement, then sued her for thousands after she left the job despite receiving little training. She brought the issue to Assemblyman Phil Steck, who helped draft the Training Repayment Agreement Provisions, known as the TRAPS law.
The new law blocks employers from enforcing contracts that create employee debt unless the training provides transferable value. Lawmakers say it protects workers from costly lawsuits they often can’t afford to fight.
