William Smith lacrosse edges Hamilton on late goal

William Smith lacrosse scored a late goal to defeat Hamilton 10-9 in a nonconference matchup on Wednesday night at Urick Stadium.

No. 10 William Smith improved to 2-0 on the season after junior midfielder Katie Grottenthaler scored the game-winning goal with 2:53 remaining in regulation. Grottenthaler finished with three goals, while senior Taryn Luzi also recorded a hat trick to lead the Herons’ offense.

Grace Rund added two goals and Mia Falco contributed a goal and an assist as William Smith held a 26-16 advantage in total shots, including a 15-8 edge in shots on goal. Katey Connolly led the Herons with six draw controls, while Janey Sypeck anchored the defense with five caused turnovers and three ground balls. Goalkeeper Casey Fiore played the full 60 minutes to earn the win.

Falco opened the scoring just over a minute into the game, but Hamilton responded with three straight goals to take an early lead. The Herons answered with a seven-goal run spanning the first and second quarters, building an 8-4 advantage by halftime.

Luzi scored twice during the surge and later completed her hat trick in the second quarter, while Rund and Grottenthaler also contributed goals to extend the lead.

Hamilton rallied in the second half with four unanswered goals to pull within one before Grottenthaler’s second goal of the game gave William Smith a 9-7 lead after three quarters. The Continentals tied the game at 9-9 early in the fourth quarter before Grottenthaler netted the decisive goal late.
