Man shot by Vestal police dies

A 38-year-old man died nearly a day after Vestal police shot him during a mental health crisis, according to Spectrum News.

Troopers say officers responded Wednesday to a Sequoia Lane home and found Eslam Ahmed Hegazy holding a knife and threatening to harm himself. Authorities say he ignored commands to drop it and threw a TV at officers. When he moved toward them and raised the knife, at least one officer fired.

Police took Hegazy to a hospital, where he later died. State Police and the attorney general’s office are now investigating, as state law requires in any death involving law enforcement.
