Nursing homes seek bigger budget share

A $1.5 billion health care funding pot has sparked a tug-of-war in Albany, according to Capital Tonight. Gov. Kathy Hochul included the money for hospitals and nursing homes but didn’t spell out how she’ll divide it.

The New York State Health Facilities Association wants half directed to nursing homes. President Stephen Hanse says low Medicaid reimbursement rates leave operators struggling and create a bottleneck, as hospitals can’t discharge patients without available long-term care beds.

Providers argue the state’s 98,000 nursing home beds need stronger support to ease the backlog and stabilize care. Lawmakers will decide how to split the funding as budget negotiations continue.
