Lansing adds planning board alternates

After weeks of tense public debate, the Lansing Town Board moved to add a second alternate to its planning board, according to town officials. Leaders plan to appoint both Aimee Caffrey and incumbent John Duthie instead of choosing one.

Residents packed recent meetings, split over who should fill the seat and how the board handles growth. Some called for more ideological diversity, especially with a proposed AI data center at the former Cayuga Power Plant likely headed for review.

Town Attorney Guy Krogh said larger projects demand more “horsepower.” Supervisor Ruth Groff called the move a compromise that recognizes merit in both candidates. The proposal heads to a public hearing March 18 before a final vote.
