Crash investigation leads to DWI-related charges in Scipio

A crash involving a tow truck in Scipio led to several traffic and alcohol-related charges.

Deputies arrested a 23-year-old Auburn man after responding to a reported crash around 11:48 p.m. on February 13 near State Route 34B and Chase Road.

Edgar Martinez-Perez, 23, faces charges of driving while ability impaired, colliding with a hazard vehicle, speed not reasonable and prudent, and having alcohol or cannabis in a motor vehicle on a highway.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office said deputies found a blue Chevrolet Tahoe with heavy damage at the scene. Investigators determined that Martinez-Perez operated the Tahoe and failed to stop for a tow truck that was pulling an unrelated vehicle from a ditch.

Deputies suspected Martinez-Perez was intoxicated and administered standardized field sobriety tests. They took him into custody and transported him to the Public Safety Building, where he provided a breath sample of .06% BAC.

Deputies released Martinez-Perez on uniform traffic tickets. He is scheduled to appear in Scipio Town Court on February 23 at 6:30 p.m.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
