Ryan targets rising utility bills

Central New Yorkers keep opening eye-popping utility bills, and State Sen. Chris Ryan wants Albany to rein them in, according to WSTM.

Ryan and Senate Democrats advanced a reform package aimed at tightening oversight of the Public Service Commission and limiting what utilities can charge ratepayers. The bills would block companies from using customer funds for lobbying or entertainment, require clearer notice of rate hikes and force regulators to weigh economic impacts before approving increases.

Ryan said lawmakers can’t set rates but can change what utilities include in proposals. The measures must pass the Assembly and win the governor’s signature before taking effect.
