RG&E warns of spike in winter bills

Brace for sticker shock on your next energy bill, according to WHAM, as RG&E says bitter cold has driven up supply costs. The utility warns customers will likely see higher charges after weeks of extreme winter demand.

RG&E says gas supply costs have climbed 20% this year and stresses it doesn’t control or profit from those market prices. One customer reported a $1,400 bill, triple the previous month. Fairport Electric issued a similar warning, blaming high grid prices, shrinking supply and sustained cold.

RG&E urges customers to call if bills feel unmanageable. The company recommends applying for HEAP assistance and setting up payment plans, with outreach events planned across Monroe County next week.
