New Tompkins library director plans busy year

A new chapter begins for Tompkins County libraries as Emerson DeMeester-Lane takes the helm at TCPL, according to the Ithaca Times. The newly appointed director says he plans to strengthen ties with rural libraries and expand collaboration across the county.

Library leaders are gearing up for packed summer reading programs, community partnerships and possible building expansions. Lansing and Newfield are exploring added space, while Groton joins a national summer learning cohort. Southworth and Ulysses libraries are planning events from Pi Day celebrations to repair cafés.

DeMeester-Lane says libraries serve as vital community hubs and digital lifelines. He hopes regular meetings with area directors will help the system grow stronger and more connected in 2026.
