National Guard troops still patrol New York prisons as a deep staffing shortage stretches on, according to Spectrum News 1. NYSCOPBA Central Region Vice President Bryan Hluska said the state remains about 4,500 officers short, though 24-hour shifts have ended since last year’s strike.
Roughly 2,700 Guard members remain inside facilities, down from 7,000. Hluska argued they’re necessary until recruitment catches up, even if they lack full correction officer training. He said staffing gaps limit inmate programs and strain safety.
DOCCS Commissioner Daniel Martuscello called the Guard a temporary fix and pointed to recruitment gains, including more exam takers and academy graduates. Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office cited bonuses, higher pay and relaxed requirements to attract new hires.
