DMVs shut down for overhaul

Need the DMV? Don’t go after 2 p.m. Friday. All New York Department of Motor Vehicles offices will close for a major tech upgrade through Wednesday, according to Spectrum News 1.

The state will migrate about 30 million records over Presidents’ Day weekend and replace hundreds of aging software systems, some dating back decades. During the switch, offices will close and online and phone services will go dark.

Officials say the new, consolidated system will cut wait times and improve security. If the rollout stays on track, offices statewide will reopen Wednesday morning. Another major phase of the DMV’s modernization plan is scheduled for 2028.
