Yates County lawmakers will hold a public hearing next month on a proposal to override the state’s tax levy limit.
The Yates County Legislature will meet at 1 p.m. on March 9 in the Legislative Chambers at 417 Liberty St. in Penn Yan to hear comments on proposed Local Law No. 1-2026. The hearing will take place during the regularly scheduled March legislative meeting.
The proposed law carries the title “A Local Law to Override the Tax Levy Limit Established in General Municipal Law Section 3-C.”
According to the document, lawmakers intend to override the limit on the amount of real property taxes that may be levied and allow the Legislature to adopt a 2027 budget that exceeds the state’s tax levy cap.
State law allows a local government to override the tax levy limit by adopting a local law approved by at least 60 percent of the governing body.
A copy of the proposed local law is available on the county’s website at https://www.yatescountyny.gov/. Residents can also attend the hearing virtually through Zoom using the webinar information listed in the public notice.
If adopted, the local law would take effect immediately upon filing with the Secretary of State.
