Syracuse men’s basketball outlasts California in double overtime (full coverage)

Syracuse men’s basketball earned a 107-100 double-overtime victory over California on Wednesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome, improving to 14-11 on the season and 5-7 in ACC play.

Nate Kingz and J.J. Starling combined for 58 points to lead the Orange, carrying the offense through a tightly contested game that featured multiple lead changes and two extra periods. Donnie Freeman also played a pivotal role late, helping Syracuse create separation in the second overtime as the Orange converted key free throws to seal the win.

The teams were tied 35-35 at halftime and remained deadlocked at 69-69 with less than six minutes remaining in regulation. California briefly gained a late advantage, but Syracuse responded with timely baskets to force overtime after the Golden Bears missed a potential game-winning attempt at the buzzer.

The first overtime period continued the back-and-forth battle, ending in another tie after California converted a late putback to extend the game. Syracuse then gained control in the second overtime, using a late three-pointer from Kingz and steady free-throw shooting to maintain a multi-possession lead in the closing minutes.

Despite struggles from beyond the arc early in the game, Syracuse generated enough offense through aggressive drives and free throws to offset California’s perimeter scoring. The victory marked the Orange’s highest-scoring conference performance of the season.
