UPDATE: GoFundMe started for Corgi rescued from Penn Yan fire

Firefighters rescued a small dog after flames tore through part of a Penn Yan home during subzero temperatures Sunday night, and a community fundraiser is now underway to help cover the animal’s emergency medical bills.

Police and fire crews responded around 8:16 p.m. Feb. 8 to a reported structure fire at 102 Garfield Ave. First arriving units reported fire coming from the back porch and out kitchen windows. Crews contained and extinguished the fire within about 10 minutes of arrival.

The fire was reported after the homeowner arrived home and found flames in the kitchen.

During a search of the residence, firefighters located and rescued a corgi named Minnie, who was unconscious when she was removed from the smoke-filled home. According to a GoFundMe campaign created by Kelsey Connelly of Penn Yan, Minnie was unresponsive in the ambulance but was resuscitated by emergency crews before being transported for further treatment.

Penn Yan Ambulance transported the dog to Cornell Animal Hospital, where she remains under care. The fundraiser states that initial emergency costs were significant and that ongoing treatment is expected as Minnie recovers from smoke inhalation and other effects of the fire.

As of Tuesday morning, the campaign had raised more than $6,300 toward a $9,000 goal, drawing more than 100 donations from community members.

The Penn Yan Fire Department received assistance from the Himrod and Dresden fire departments, Penn Yan Ambulance, Yates County Office of Emergency Services, and Penn Yan Police. Investigators continue to examine the cause of the fire.

The homeowner is receiving assistance from the Red Cross and community members.
