A weekend snowmobile ride on a private trail in Wyoming County ended with one teenager dead and another injured after two machines lost control and slammed into a pile of logs.
State Police said troopers from SP Warsaw responded around 12:12 p.m. on Feb. 8 to a reported snowmobile collision on a marked trail off Wilder Road in the town of Warsaw.
Investigators said a 2012 Ski-Doo traveling south on the trail lost control and struck a pile of logs, ejecting the operator. The rider was later identified as 17-year-old Steven J. Gregorie of Varysburg.
A 16-year-old friend riding behind him on a 2015 Arctic Cat also lost control, left the marked trail, and struck the same log pile. Police said the second snowmobile came to rest on Gregorie after ejecting its operator.

Uninvolved snowmobilers in the area called 911 and helped at the scene until first responders arrived.
Gregorie was taken by ambulance to Wyoming County Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled through the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office. The 16-year-old sustained minor injuries.
State Police said investigators found no signs of foul play.
The Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Collision Reconstruction Unit, and Environmental Conservation Police assisted with the investigation.
