Progressive Delgado ends bid challenging Hochul in Democratic primary

Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado ended his bid for governor Tuesday, saying his campaign no longer had a viable path forward.

India Walton, who joined the ticket as a running mate, also suspended her role in the campaign, according to a statement released by the Delgado/Walton team.

“I’ve decided to end my campaign for Governor of New York,” Delgado said. “After much consideration, I’ve concluded that there simply is no viable path forward.”

Delgado said the decision came after deep reflection and did not change his broader political commitments.

“And though my campaign has come to an end, I fully intend to do all I can in our effort to build a more humane, affordable and equitable state that serves all New Yorkers,” he said. “I will also support Democrats in our effort to hold the line against Trump and take back our democracy.”

He emphasized gratitude for supporters, staff, and volunteers who backed the campaign.

“I do not make this decision lightly, particularly given that so many have poured their belief into our campaign and are desperate to be given a voice,” Delgado said.

Delgado also urged voters to stay engaged and hold elected leaders accountable.

“Please never forget that your voice matters, and its power extends well beyond any one campaign or any one politician,” he said. “At the end of the day, they work for you. We, and I, work for you.”

He said he plans to continue serving New Yorkers in his current role.

“I will carry with me as I continue to serve the people of New York as Lieutenant Governor,” Delgado said.

Walton thanked the campaign for the opportunity and hinted her public work is not over.

“It was the most unexpected and huge honor to be considered and brought into the team so seamlessly and with such care,” Walton said. “I’m sure this is not the last folks will hear from team Delgado/Walton!”
