College-bound students across the Finger Lakes have a new chance to get help paying for school.
Sen. Pam Helming announced that applications are now open for two academic and two athletic scholarships offered through the New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators.
Each scholarship awards $3,000 to eligible students. The opportunities include the Senator James D. Conte Memorial Academic Scholarship and the Senator John J. Marchi Memorial Athletic Scholarship.
Applicants must be New York residents who are current college students or high school seniors planning to attend college. Students also must live within a conference member’s district, which for Helming includes all of Livingston, Ontario, and Wayne counties, along with parts of Monroe County.
“With the cost of college soaring, I am proud to be part of a group of legislators that offer scholarships to college bound students,” Helming said. “I encourage all those pursuing a higher education in my Senate District to apply!”
Students must have a grade point average of at least 85, show involvement in community service and extracurricular activities, and demonstrate financial need. Athletic scholarship applicants must also participate in organized sports. Applicants do not need to be of Italian American heritage.
The application deadline is March 16. Students can apply online through the New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators website. Scholarship recipients will be honored during a ceremony in Albany in May.
