A blast of extreme cold shut off electricity across Watkins Glen Saturday night, pushing crews into a village-wide scramble to restore service, according to WENY.
Mayor Laurie DeNardo said the outage stretched from First Street South to Tenth Street and east to Magee. The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office reported the system overloaded as residents cranked up electric heat during frigid temperatures. Crews urged people to shut off nonessential electric heat and limit use where possible.
The Watkins Glen Fire Department opened its doors as a warming center while repairs continued. By late evening, Mayor DeNardo confirmed power had been fully restored throughout the village.
