Lyons woman charged in welfare fraud case

Deputies arrested a Town of Lyons woman after investigators uncovered alleged misuse of food assistance benefits. Authorities identified the woman as Melody Fish, 20, of Phelps Street in the Town of Lyons.

The arrest followed a welfare fraud investigation in the Town of Lyons led by the Wayne County Department of Social Services and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

Deputies said the investigation found that Fish allowed another person to use her Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program EBT card without authorization. Investigators allege the card was used to purchase food items.

As a result, deputies charged Fish with misuse of food stamps and petit larceny.

Deputies took Fish to the Wayne County Jail for processing. She later received an appearance ticket and will return to Lyons Town Court at a later date.

The sheriff’s office said the Wayne County Department of Social Services assisted with the investigation.
