Hobart basketball was defeated 75-68 by Union in a Liberty League matchup Saturday afternoon despite a strong scoring performance from sophomore Monty Nedd.
Nedd led all players with 26 points, shooting 10-of-16 from the field and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Allen Mordi and Gabriel Bergeron each added 10 points, while Alex Moesch contributed nine points and a game-high four steals for the Statesmen, who moved to 11-10 overall and 5-9 in conference play.
Hobart controlled much of the first half, using an early 16-2 run to build an 11-point advantage and taking a 34-31 lead into halftime after closing the period on a 13-6 surge. The Statesmen extended the margin to as many as eight points early in the second half before Union rallied behind timely perimeter shooting.
The Garnet Chargers tied the game midway through the half and followed with an 8-0 run to take their first significant lead of the period. Hobart cut the deficit to four on a Bergeron three-pointer late in the game, but Union responded with key baskets and free throws to maintain separation in the closing minutes.
Union was led by Tanner Tedesco with 21 points, while Christian Dufort added 19 and Matthew Garside scored 11. The Garnet Chargers also held a slight 37-36 rebounding edge.
Hobart committed a season-low seven turnovers and outscored Union 42-18 in the paint but was unable to complete the comeback.
The Statesmen return home Friday, February 13, hosting St. Lawrence to begin a four-game homestand.
