People curious about a future in healthcare can now get a closer look inside the field through a new shadowing opportunity in the Finger Lakes.
UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health is offering its Career Insights Shadowing Program, a structured, observational experience designed to help participants explore careers in both clinical and non-clinical healthcare settings.
The program gives participants firsthand exposure to daily operations across departments, helping them better understand roles, responsibilities, and workplace environments before committing to a career path.
The shadowing experience ranges from two to 40 hours and must be completed within a consecutive four-week period. Recommended shifts last between two and four hours.
The program is strictly observational. Participants may watch routine activities but may not perform hands-on tasks, procedures, or patient care.
In patient care areas, participants will not be exposed to blood, body fluids, infectious diseases, or direct physical contact with patients. Shadowing is not permitted in operating rooms.
The opportunity is open to individuals age 16 and older. UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health noted the program is unpaid and does not provide academic credit, internship hours, or financial compensation.
Program leaders said the goal is to provide a safe, respectful, and educational experience that complies with privacy, safety, and infection control standards. The program is intended solely for career exploration.
