False gun report at Keuka College leads to arrest

Deputies arrested an 18-year-old student after investigators determined a reported gun threat on the Keuka College campus never existed.

Yates County sheriff’s deputies issued an appearance ticket Monday evening following an investigation into a social media post that claimed an unknown person on campus had a gun. Deputies responded to the campus in the early morning hours of January 28 after receiving the report.

After a thorough investigation, deputies concluded there was no threat to campus safety. Investigators traced the social media post back to a student at the college.

The student, identified by the sheriff’s office as an eligible youthful offender, was charged with falsely reporting an incident in the third degree.

The arrest stems from a complaint taken by Keuka College Campus Safety. Deputy M. Aini responded to the incident, and Sgt. Brad Cole served as the reporting officer.

The youthful offender is scheduled to appear in Jerusalem Town Court at a later date.
